The series Settlement History of Iraqi Kurdistan (SHIK) presents the results of research carried out in the Iraqi Kurdistan from 2012 through 2017. During this time, an extremely rich group of heritage monuments was registered on an area of 3058 km2 located on both banks of the Greater Zab, at the foot of the Kurdistan mountains. More than 300 archaeological sites, 4 rock reliefs, nearly 80 cultural heritage monuments (cemeteries, Christian, Muslim and Jewish architecture, industrial installations) and over 100 caves illustrate nearly 10,000 years of the region’s history, from the Neolithic period to the mid-20th century AD. The SHIK series will consist of two introductory volumes (an atlas and a volume on the project’s methodology), eight volumes presenting the dataset for settlement sites (six volumes), caves and heritage monuments (one volume each), and a volume analyzing the development of the settlement during particular periods. |

Since the middle of the 1990s, Tamil migrants have built ?aiva temples. These are based on the pattern of their South Indian and Sri Lankan homelands but with significant modifications, transformations and altered functions resulting from new circumstances and pressures to adapt to the status of an immigrant. Traditionally confined to South Asia, Hinduism is being spread world-wide by modern migration movements .As the world`s third largest religious community after Christianity and Islam, Hinduism is currently in the process of developing from a folk religion into a world religion. It is emigrant Hinduism which is primarily responsible for this epochal change. The religious metamorphosis is not taking place in India itself, but overseas. This makes expat-Hinduism an important subject of research for Indologists. The comparison of Hinduism abroad with original Hinduism in India and Sri Lanka enables predictions about possible development opportunities in the home countries.
In their book Konrad and Marion Meisig offer sketches of thirty-three Tamil ?aiva temples in India, Sri Lanka, Germany, Canada, Great Britain and Mauritius. These sketches are based on four categories of temples, depending on whether their principal deity is Ga?e?a, Muru- gan, a goddess (Dev?) or ?iva. Die Bildung völkischer Verbände und Parteien im Deutschen Kaiserreich von 1871 bis 1918 war begleitet von Bestrebungen, deren Gedankengut auch auf anderen Feldern als der Politik zur Geltung zu bringen: in den Künsten, der Publizistik, der Lebensreform und nicht zuletzt der beginnenden Jugendbewegung.
Stefan Breuer entwirft in Kulturkämpfe nach dem Kulturkampf ein breites Panorama dieser Szene und widmet sich dabei neben ideologiekritischen Aspekten insbesondere den Aktivitäten von Kultur- und Bewegungsunternehmern, die über das Kaiserreich hinaus auch die radikale Rechte der Weimarer Republik geprägt haben. Beginnend mit Ottomar Betas Schriften zwischen Bayreuther Bewegung, antisemitischer Bewegung und Kolonialbewegung wird dem Kulturkampf am Beispiel ausgewählter Akteure nachgegangen: von der Zeitschrift „Das Zwanzigste Jahrhundert“, die zahlreiche Autoren der völkischen Szene versammelte, über den eliminatorischen Antisemitismus des Musik- und Kunstschriftstellers Heinrich Pudor, die Verwerfungen innerhalb der Szene beim Streit um die nationale Bedeutung Goethes, den Beitrag Heinrich Driesmans zur Erweiterung des Kulturkampfes durch den Eugen Diederichs Verlag bis hin zu den Bestrebungen des Schriftstellers Wilhelm Kotzde, das Gedankengut des 1894 gegründeten Deutschbundes in die Jugendbewegung zu tragen. Der Band schließt mit einer Übersicht über die Bemühungen um eine um die Kategorie des Erhabenen zentrierte völkische Ästhetik sowie einer Untersuchung über die „Träume vom Dritten Reich“.

Die Frage nach der Entwicklung von Schularchitekturen wird von der ‚Historischen Bildungsforschung‘ und der Architekturgeschichte bisher mit der Europäischen Moderne in Verbindung gebracht. Erst durch die Aufklärung und die Entstehung des modernen europäischen Staates wurde die Entwicklung hin zu intentional, unter pädagogischen Prämissen, geplanten und genutzten Räumen möglich – so das derzeit dominierende Narrativ.
Der von Thomas Grunewald herausgegebene Band stellt diese Erzählung durch neue Erkenntnisse und Forschungsansätze grundsätzlich infrage. Unter Berücksichtigung interdisziplinärer Perspektiven und anhand international gewählter Beispiele wird gezeigt, dass bereits vor dem Epochenumbruch um 1800 verschiedene Bauformen existierten, die ausdrücklich pädagogischen Zwecken dienten. Die bewusste Verbindung von Raum und pädagogischem Konzept war bereits in der Frühen Neuzeit bekannt und führte zu vielfältigen, kulturell und religiös geprägten Ausdrucksformen.
Mit diesem neuen Blick auf das bis heute bildungs- und sozialpolitisch sowie kulturell bedeutende Thema der Schularchitekturen öffnet der Band die Forschung für vormoderne, interkulturelle sowie interdisziplinär und international vergleichend ausgerichtete Perspektiven.

Die Acta Unitatis Fratrum sind das bedeutendste Quellencorpus zur Geschichte und Theologie der Böhmischen Brüder und zugleich ein herausragendes Monument konfessioneller Erinnerungskultur im spätmittelalterlich-frühneuzeitlichen Mitteleuropa. Das Sammelwerk wurde in der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts für die Kirchenleitung der Brüderunität angelegt und besteht aus vierzehn Handschriftenbänden mit mehr als 10.000 eng beschriebenen Seiten, überwiegend in tschechischer Sprache. Die ungewöhnlich dichte und umfangreiche Überlieferung umfasst Abschriften von Texten und Briefen der Brüder von deren ersten Anfängen in der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts bis zum Jahr 1589. Hinzu kommen gegnerische Schriften, Akten und Berichte über Kontroversen, Verfolgungen und kirchenpolitische Ereignisse in Böhmen und Mähren vom Höhepunkt der hussitischen Bewegung bis zur Konsolidierung der europäischen Reformation.
Im Auftrag des Historischen Instituts der Akademie der Wissenschaften der Tschechischen Republik und der Direktion der Europäisch-Festländischen Provinz der Brüder-Unität werden die Acta Unitatis Fratrum jetzt erstmals für historisch, theologisch, philologisch oder kulturgeschichtlich arbeitende Wissenschaftler durch Regesten und Einleitungen umfassend erschlossen.

Um die dynamischen kulturellen Verflechtungen und Wechselwirkungen zu erfassen, untersucht die Autorin die zentralen Themen und Probleme der identitätsstiftenden Prozesse sowie die öffentlichen Selbstdarstellungen ausgewählter Bevölkerungsgruppen und sprachlicher Entitäten – in Rijeka deutsch, fiumanisch, italienisch, kroatisch, ungarisch, serbisch und slowenisch, in Maribor deutsch, slowenisch, kroatisch, tschechisch und ungarisch. Ergänzt wird dies durch die vergleichende Analyse schriftlicher Quellen aus Sprach-, Kultur- und Sportvereinen sowie religiösen Gemeinden in beiden multikulturellen und multireligiösen Orten. From the Hellenistic period until the Muslim Middles Ages, the words and deeds of Alexander the Great (356–323 BC) reverberated through the centuries. The tradition of his conquests and legends, which are best preserved in countless versions of the Alexander Romance, was a focal point of the conference in Wroc?aw 2019, the results of which are contained in this publication. The encounters between the European conquerors and the nations and cultures of the East, which are reflected in writings and works of art from East and West, enable us to gain a deep mutual understanding, even of the misunderstandings.
Contributions in this volume compare classical literary sources with non-European writings, epigraphic, archaeological and numismatic evidence. They explore the complexity of the classical source tradition in order to look beyond the boundaries of the time in which they were written down. By drawing on the methodology of the ‘literary turn’ in historiography, they draw our attention to ancient authors as conscious artists with their own agenda. An attempt is made to examine the Iranian background of Alexander’s politics and to verify modern hypotheses about his legacy in Iran and Central Asia. In Iran there was cultural continuity from the Achaemenid through the Hellenistic era, just as in Egypt, whose art absorbed non-native influences from the Saite period onwards. It is argued that the western influence or Hellenization that Alexander’s conquests brought to the heartland of the Persian Empire, its eastern part and Egypt, was limited. It shows that the last Persian king of Egypt, Darius III, and the first Macedonian pharaoh Alexander had more in common than is generally recognized. This book basically advocates the idea that a balance must be established between continuity and change, both in Egypt and in the East under Alexander and Hellenistic kings.

Stratégiquement établie dans le Delta oriental du Nil, Tell el-Dab`a a livré un large éventail de productions importées qui témoignent du dynamisme des réseaux d’échanges au sein desquels la cité était intégrée. Les assemblages funéraires et domestiques offrent une large part aux céramiques venues de Méditerranée orientale, de Moyenne- et de Haute-Égypte, ainsi que de Nubie. La prise de pouvoir des rois Hyksôs, événement sans précédent dans l`Histoire égyptienne, n`a cependant pas été sans conséquences sur les liens diplomatiques et commerciaux établis avec ces régions. Entrepris dans le cadre de l`axe de recherche Trade and Crisis Analysis du projet ERC Advanced Grant "The Enigma of the Hyksos" (dir. M. Bietak), cet ouvrage propose, d`une part, d`examiner l`impact de la prise de pouvoir de la XVe dynastie sur les connections à longue distance du site et, d`autre part, d`interroger le rôle des facteurs économiques dans la chute des Hyksôs. |

Auf die ersten beiden Bände des Katalogs der „Handschriften der Signaturenreihe Hdschr. der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz“ mit den Nummern 1–300 (erschienen 2013 und 2020) folgt jetzt der dritte und abschließende Band. Er umfasst die in den Jahren 1988 bis 1997 in der früheren Westberliner Staatsbibliothek getätigten Erwerbungen an Handschriften (Hdschr. 301 bis 456). Infolge der Vereinigung der beiden deutschen Staaten wurden 1997 die Bestände der Handschriftenabteilungen beider Berliner Staatsbibliotheken zusammengeführt und die Signaturenreihe „Hdschr.“ daraufhin geschlossen.
Der dritte Band spiegelt die Kontinuität der Erwerbungen der früheren Jahre wider und belegt die in weiten Teilen hohe Qualität der beschriebenen Stücke aus dem 9. bis 20. Jahrhundert. Inhaltlich ist an dieser Stelle eine Charakterisierung, die über ein ‚disparat‘ hinausgeht, kaum möglich. Die Texte reichen von der antiken römischen Poesie (Vergil in Hdschr. 363) über die reiche spätmittelalterliche Predigtliteratur (u.a. in Hdschr. 336, 349) oder die Fachliteratur aus Mittelalter und Neuzeit (u.a. Hdschr. 319, 384) bis hin zu einem philosophischen Werk aus jüngster Zeit (Hdschr. 424). Die bislang letzten Erwerbungen im Bereich der griechischen Handschriften stehen ebenfalls in dieser Reihe (Hdschr 316/320 und 318).

In the first three decades of the 20th century, the importance of Jewish artists from Central and Eastern Europe grew in the international artistic community. Liberated from the dictates of orthodox religion, they accepted the vision of the modern world, joining the current of changes shaping European culture of the interwar period. In ?ód?, which next to Warsaw was the second largest center of Jewish life in Poland, the ideas of "new art" were realized by artists associated with the poet Moses Broderzon and the avant-garde Yung Yidish group. Three volumes of poetry, printed in 1921 by Achrid, an ephemeral publishing house, containing works of the Jewish poets Chaim Krul, David Zitman and Rahel Lipstein, with original hand-colored linocuts created by Ida Brauner, Esther Carp and Dina Matus, should also be linked to this circle.
This book includes facsimiles of the original publications of the Achrid, along with English translations of the poems, preceded by articles on the environment of Jewish writers and painters in ?ód?, from 1918 to 1939, and the artistic aspects of Achrid`s books. The narrative concludes with a bibliographical note and brief biographies of the poets and graphic artists.

The series Settlement History of Iraqi Kurdistan (SHIK) presents the results of research carried out in the Iraqi Kurdistan from 2012 through 2017. During this time, an extremely rich group of heritage monuments was registered on an area of 3058 km2 located on both banks of the Greater Zab, at the foot of the Kurdistan mountains. More than 300 archaeological sites, 4 rock reliefs, nearly 80 cultural heritage monuments (cemeteries, Christian, Muslim and Jewish architecture, industrial installations) and over 100 caves illustrate nearly 10,000 years of the region’s history, from the Neolithic period to the mid-20th century AD. The SHIK series will consist of two introductory volumes (an atlas and a volume on the project’s methodology), eight volumes presenting the dataset for settlement sites (six volumes), caves and heritage monuments (one volume each), and a volume analyzing the development of the settlement during particular periods. |

The shaft tomb of Psenosiris, mayor of Athribis west of modern Sohag, is located in the mountain west of the temple of Repit near the modern village Sheik Hamed. It is one of several tombs of the necropolis, probably the most important one. Firstly mentioned more than 110 years ago by the British egyptologist Flinders Petrie, it has remained unpublished with the exception of it’s two astronomical ceilings.
For the first time Mohamed Abuel Yazid offers a comprehensive publication of the whole tomb including its colourful ceilings and all its long texts which make this tomb in Athribis to one of the most important ones of the early Roman period in all of Egypt. The complete decoration of the tomb is presented in facsimile drawings as well as in detailed photos. All texts are presented in hieroglyphs, transliterations and translations. Wall plans are indicating their exact positions in the tomb. The author offers also a complete glossary of the texts as well as a conclusion about dating the tomb (there are no cartouches in this monument) and its relationship with the great temple of the site.

This volume contains thirteen papers that were presented during the Jena Colloquium on the Frau Professor Hilprecht collection held on March 17–18, 2022, at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. The collection contains ca. 3,300 objects from the ancient Near East, mostly from the Mesopotamian city of Nippur. The papers discuss the history of the collection and its founder, Hermann Volrath Hilprecht, and include a paper on the origin of the Old Assyrian tablets that also ended up in Jena. Other studies investigate the archaeology of Nippur and its ancient archives. New cuneiform material from Nippur, currently held in the Istanbul museums and relevant to the Hilprecht Collection, is presented. The volume additionally contains a number of miscellaneous articles on the Akkadian language. As the colloquium was held in honour of its curator, Manfred Krebernik, the volume begins with his bibliography and a short sketch of his personality. |
